Viking Range White Stand Mixer 7 Qt. Review

(More customer reviews)The machine died after 3 months. I am just starting to bake and was enjoying it until I taxed the Viking with bread making - not multiple loaves but just one at a time. It died very silently - no smoke or ozone/burnt motor odor - just quietly died while making cream icing with cream cheese and cream. I hit the reverse and it just started to make a gurgling noise and then was no more.
I called the company - not really the company but a repair facility in Detroit and was told the best they could do was to mail me a FedEx slip and I was responsible for boxing the unit and they would repair it.
When I suggested that they send me a box or another motor unit (I would send the current unit back) I was informed that this was not company policy. When I attempted to call Viking and when I asked to speak to corporate customer service I was directed back to the repair facility in Detroit - this happened over and over.
I mentioned that I bought the unit retail on the website they still insisted that they couldn't help me.
Cooks illustrated rated the Kitchen Aid Professional 600 as their number one choice - the Viking did not even make it into the first three best choices - I strongly agree. The Viking is more expensive and the service is lacking. And more importantly the maching is inferior.
I am considering the Hobart or the Kitchen Aid and I will keep the Viking as backup. When you buy a mixer get it from a department store that offers guarantees that include replacement units. I am going to the Sears website now.

(More customer reviews)I do not much go for to many matching pieces in the kitchen, it becomes overkill, and, well, ridiculoous. My wallpaper will never match my dishes! This is quite cute, hang on wall with some greenery falling out maybe, or use as a pretty bread basket when you have guests. Why 3 stars, not really useful as a colander. If you want a colander to actually use, get the one from Calphalon. I still think it is quite cute and able to have a purpose or 2.

(More customer reviews)KitchenAid hurts its brand name for each day this product is on the market. Here's the good news: The soft rise feature seems to work well for me; toast is easy to remove. The bagel function works well for bagels and hamburger buns. I have to change the darkness setting for different bread types (sandwich slices, buns, bagels, etc.), but I expect that, so it's ok. The digital setting knob is convenient because you don't have to guesstimate the correct setting. The bad news: The thing won't toast consistently. Almost every day, I wake up and load the toaster with two refrigerated bagels (4 sliced halves). It's always a cold start in the morning. I set it to brown on #6. The results range from moderately overdone to no browning at all. There's no excuse for it. As another reviewer has said, it also doesn't cook very evenly with 1 or 3 slices. Evidently, the radiant heat from the opposite side hits only one edge of the single slice and overcooks just that side. If you stick a single slice in the center of the slot, it gets even worse, because both edges will be overdone, while the center is underdone. I have to turn the toaster down one notch if I plan on running a second batch of toast. The Even-Heat System is bogus. I give this toaster an A for effort and an F for execution.

Viking Professional 7 -quart Stand Mixer Review

(More customer reviews)After extensive research on the web and through friends' experiences, I decided to opt for this 7-qt mixer. Two other major brands I considered are Hobart and of course, KitchenAid. The DeLonghi mixer comes close to specs and features, but is also marketed under Kenwood and Hamilton Beach. I sure wouldn't want to pay premium price for a Hamilton Beach. The Hobart is a true commercial grade mixer but overkill for the occasional home use, not to mention at lease twice the cost. The KA doesn't have the 1000 wattage or the professional feel like the Viking 7-qt mixer. One thing my wife appreciates about this unit is that it has rear wheels for easy maneuverability around the countertop - the average stand mixer weights over 20 lbs so this feature definitely helps. Although the availability of accessories for this mixer is few, however, I do notice that the included beater, whisk, and dough hook are well-made, stainless steel attachments (not plastic coating over metal). Overall, the Viking mixer is powerful, easy to use, and professionally designed that won't look dated 10 years from now. This mixer must be a joy to work with because my wife's been baking almost every week since we got it. By the way, the stainless gray model one sees on the Viking website is grayer in color - only the bowl, attachments, and the front "Viking" attachment cover are stainless. Highly recommended.

Mountain Woods Large Pizza Peel Review

(More customer reviews)I picked this peel because it was larger than others I was looking at and it was made of hardwood. I wanted to use it as a peel and as a cutting board and this peel fills the bill nicely. When I make bread, I put a little corn meal on the peel and shape my round dough and let it rise right on the peel. When the oven is ready, I slide the bread right off the peel onto a hot pizza stone in the oven and let the bread bake for 30 minutes. Because the peel has a slanted/sharp edge on the front, I can slide it under the bread and bring it back out of the oven when it is done. It sits on the peel to cool and then I cut it right on the peel and enjoy fresh home made bread.
This is my main use of the peel. I haven't really used it for pizza as my main use is a cutting board and home made bread utility. It is of high quality and has a good price. I would recommend this peel as a gift or for your own use around the kitchen. It is larger than most peels, so be sure you have a place to store it out of the way when not using.
