(More customer reviews)This was the slicer we were hoping someone would make. After using this, we've thrown away both the wooden box and the plastic slicer we've used.
The construction is durable, with the heft of solid maple giving a feel of quality as well as real beauty. Once we got a coat of mineral oil on it, the grain came alive and was even more beautiful. The stainless steel is sturdy and polished to a mirror finish with no sharp edges at all. They guide the knife nicely - and you don't end up with any plastic shavings in your bread that so often accompanied our previous products. The cut is straight, although a long knife is required as with any other slicer. Its function is rivaled only with its aesthetic quality. We always felt the plastic cutting guides looked so cheap and cheesy that we had to hide them in the cupboard. We leave this one counter with pride.
This slicer is the best thing since...well...home-baked bread.

Compare our slicer's weight at about 4.5 pounds to the other slicers in this segment (usually around one pound). Many slicers here say they are made out of "wood", but will not tell you what wood they are made from. You can expect inexpensive, soft wood stapled together in some instances which your bread knife will cut into far quicker than our hard maple. Our slicer will also arrive fully assembled....whereas most of the other slicers do not. This bread slicer is hand made with pride in Tampa, Florida to give you perfectly sliced bread at home and will last you a long long time. The wood is natural maple, we do not treat it with anything. Please see our website for more on seasoning a bread board. We use it daily to cut our own bread. We recommend using a long, sharp bread knife that has a blade length of at least ten inches for best results. If you "hand make" your bread, our slicer may still be for you. Contact us and we will send you a scan of our slicer guide. You can print this out and then you can compare the size of your loaf to our stainless steel cutting guides. You will then know if our slicer will suit your hand made loaf. Happy Baking from the Bread Slicer Depot!
